Hello, and welcome to The Gentleman’s Plate: A Vegan Food blog for the Modern Gentleman. We are Sanjay and Helly, and together we develop, write and photograph recipes for this blog.
We recently started this blog to combine our passions of vegan cooking + all things internet. We are so excited to share some of my favorite vegan (and sometimes healthy) recipes with you, all while improving my food photography and blogging skills along the way!
Why? Because I love burgers, and tacos, and buffalo wings… and bacon. Oh bacon! (more on that soon).
And because we love cooking. There’s something therapeutic about taking different ingredients and applying some time, attention, and craft to creating something awesome. Cooking is a science and an art form, and I love everything about it. And if we can make it vegan, which is better for our health, the environment, and other earthlings of this planet – then, why not!?
I grew up in an Indian household, where food was not only the center of all family life, but also a part of my religious identity (my mother is a devout Hindu and vegetarian). This is where I learned the importance of compassion, and the idea that feeding others is akin to godliness.
Watching my mother cook for us while growing up taught me to appreciate and love the world of vegetables (bitter melon, okra, young jackfruit anyone!?). As I intently observed my mother cooking I also learned how to unlock the power of spices, along with cooking techniques passed on from generations past.
I was also lucky enough to grow up in a culturally progressive household where my father was more Americanized (and an omnivore). We spent our summers BBQ’ing every chance we got, and McDonald’s was my dad’s vision of the American Dream. My mom’s lamb curry was his favorite, and we had it often. This is where I learned to appreciate the flavors and textures of non-plant foods, and effectively wrecked my palate (as nothing vegan will ever compare to the taste of KFC).
I am also a proud Californian, and that is another big influence on my cooking style and flavor palate. Avocados. My heart is made of an avocado. The freshness of produce, open skies, fertile lands and ocean winds. These are the things that I wish I could capture on one plate. If you read this blog, you will notice that I lean towards Asian flavors, and I credit this to growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and have been living in Los Angeles for most of my adult life. I love all things Californian, and I love California inspired foods.
